The genesis of the modality project {dot} design began as a typical speech therapy referral. Behind closed doors. Yet, It has evolved into a collaboration with Professor Chioffi that has been anything but typical. It holds promise. At this initial stage I consider it as simple seed, but I imagine it, as a giant redwood. I visualize other similar seeds abundant in the surrounding landscape. We hope to witness this seed as it matures, propagates and take on a life all its own.
In what follows we will attempt to describe the nature of our collaboration, how it has grown and the promise it holds. It is our sincere hope that those arrive at this site and consider our efforts with an appreciation of the potential that Professor Chioffi’s unique combination of personal experiences and scope of expertise have, for highlighting the need in extending the field of graphic design, in directions beyond its current boundaries.

The importance of these contributions to the field of communication disorders, are becoming increasingly relevant in an age of screen-based, multimodal literacies. the modality project {dot} design hopes to push the semiotic boundaries of visually-based forms of communication in ways that provide persons with disabilities the tools and practices to convey complex ideas in challenging communication settings. We can easily envision, for we have seen, the communicatively disabled individual communicating complex notions with non-disabled individuals via multimodal artifacts, in real-time where the privileging of spoken language became backgrounded as the inherent strengths of different modalities (i.e., the visual in our investigations) naturally rose to the foreground.
We readily acknowledge our own limitations. The framing of our theories and artifacts are intentionally speculative in their current iterations. Variations exist, and such, our considerations of disability are not shared by all. Our personal circumstances likewise are diverse. And thus, we invite each visitor to engage and contribute to our research, as we seek to collectively learn from others.// JA + DCC
